How to Lock Cells in Google Sheets: Step by Step Guide
Follow the below steps to Lock cells in Google Sheets
Step 1: Open your Google Sheet.
Step 2: Select the cells that you want to lock.
Step 3: Right-click on the Selected cells and Choose “View more cell actions “.
Once the cells that you want to lock are selected, Right Click on it, and from the drop-down available options Select “View more cell actions “.
Step 4: Under “View more cell actions” Select “Protect Range“
Step 5: Enter a description of the “Protected Sheets and Range” Screen
Once you select Protect range a “Protected Sheets and description” window will pop up.
Specify a name in the description area if you want ( Optional)
Step 6: Now Click on “Set Permissions”
Step 7: Edit the permission as per your requirement.
Once you click on “Set Permissions” you will get a Range editing permissions screen.
Here you can restrict who can edit this range . With the default setting which is “Only you”, only you have the permission to edit this range.
To change the settings and add another editor, Click on the down arrow in front of Only you and Select Custom.
Step 8: Once you are finished with the Selection, Click on Done.
Now the Selected cells or range will be protected against editing.
How to show a warning for editing a cell in google sheets
If you don’t want to Lock a Cell against editing. However, just want to show a warning to the user before editing. The following option can be useful
Under the “Range editing permissions” screen, you can choose ” Show a warning When editing this range”
Once you Share the Sheet with these settings with a user and once they try to edit the Range, they will get a message shown as below.
