How To Calculate Variance In Google Sheets: Step by Step Guide
To Calculate variance in Google Sheets you can use the VAR function. The VAR function will calculate the variance of sample data. To calculate the variance of an entire population you can use the VARP function.
Here’s How to Calculate Variance In Google Sheets :
Enter your sample data in a single column in Google Sheets. In this example, we will calculate the variance of a Sample data
Choose a specific cell where want to display the calculated variance values and type the formula “=VAR(A2:A8)” as shown below.
In the below example we have selected cell B2 and specified the range of cells A2 to A8 within the VAR function.
Once you press the enter key the variance will be calculated for the selected sample data values.
Confirm Google Auto-fill to apply the formula to the rest of the cells in the Column.
Google sheets will display the decimal values up to 8 decimal places. In case you want to display fewer decimal places you can use the Decrease Decimal Places button from the toolbar.
How to use the VARP function in Google Sheets
You can also use the VARP function to calculate the variance of an entire sample data or population.
Enclosed are the steps to use the VARP function in Google Sheets
Step 1: Open Google Sheets with Sample data.
In this example, we will use the below sample data
Step 2: Select the cell and use the VARP function
Select the cell where you need to display the result and use the VARP formula for example “=VARP(B2:B10)“
Step 3: Press Enter and the variance will be displayed on the selected cell.
