Change Vertical Cell Padding

  • Identify and Select the cells where the Vertical padding needs to be changed.
  • Now Click on Vertical Align from the top Menu.
  • Change the alignment
  • Adjust the height of your rows.
  • Now go format menu and change the wrapping.
  • Your rows will appear bigger now which is a workaround for adding vertical padding.

Change Horizontal Cell Padding

  • Select the cells for which you want to Change the Horizontal Padding
  • Now go to Custom number format using the Format Menu.
  • Based on your requirement enter the spaces followed by the “@” Sign.
  • Horizontal padding will be added to your spreadsheet

How to Change Cell Padding in Google Sheets : Step by Step Guide.

To Change Change Cell Padding in Google Sheets follow the below steps :

Vertical Padding

Step 1: Identify and Select the cells where the Vertical padding needs to be changed.

  • Use the keyboard Shortcut CTRL+A if you want to select all the cells in your spreadsheet.
  • You can also hover over the mouse cursor to the top left corner of your Google Sheet and click on it which will select the entire sheet.

Step 2: Now Click on Vertical Align from the top Menu.

Step 3: Change the alignment

We have Changed the alignment to Middle

Step 4: Now go format menu and change the wrapping

  • Click on Format menu on the main menu bar
  • Under the Format Menu drop-down Select Wrapping.
  • Under wrapping Select either Overflow or Clip

Step 5: Adjust the height of your rows.

Hover over your mouse cursor to the top-hand side of your sheet where you need to adjust the height and simply drag it down.

This will be the height of your rows.

Step 6: Your rows will appear bigger now which is a workaround for adding vertical padding.

Horizontal Padding

Step 1: Select the cells for which you want to Change the Horizontal Padding.

In the below example we have selected all the cells.

Step 2: Now go to Custom number format using the Format Menu.

  • Click on Format Menu
  • Now Select Number.
  • Under Number Scroll down and Select Custom number format.

Go to Format ->Number ->Custom Number Format

Step 3: Based on your requirement enter the spaces followed by the “@” Sign.

  • Type spaces using the space bar depending on your need and then type at the rate sign “@” without quotes.
  • Now Click on Apply

For example, to add padding by two spaces we have added two spaces followed by “@”.

Horizontal padding has been added with two spaces as shown below.
