- Open Google Sheet
- Create a new worksheet with a list of category
- Identify and Note the cell range for the list of drop-down categories
- Now Choose the column where you want to display the Category drop-down list.
- Click on the Data menu and Choose “Data Validation ” from the drip-Down
- Select Data Range on the Data Validation screen
- Select cell Range from the Second worksheet for the list of items for drop-down
- Click on Save to apply the Data Validation selection
- Required categories are created with a drop-down list in Google Sheet.

Enclosed are the steps to create categories in Google Sheets:
We will first create the required items required by the Category drop-down items in the second worksheet and then display a list with the category drop-down list in the first worksheet.
Step 1: Open Google Sheet
Step 2: Create a new worksheet with a list of category
Create a new worksheet and type the list of items that you want to appear as drop-down items.
For example, we have created a new worksheet called Movie Genre
Step 3: Identify and Note the cell range for the list of drop-down categories
Step 3: Now Choose the column where you want to display the Category drop-down list.
Go back to the first worksheet and Select the Columns where you need to display a drop-down
Step 4: Click on the Data menu and Choose “Data Validation ” from the drip-Down.
- Click on the Data menu on the Main menu bar.
- Now from the drop-down options
Step 5: Select Data Range on the Data Validation screen
- Once you click on” Data Validation“, Data Validation windows will pop-up
- Now Click on the “Select Data Range” option in front of the “List from a Range” criteria as shown below
Step 6: Select cell Range from the Second worksheet for the list of items for drop-down
Once you click on the “Select data range” option, a new window will pop up.
- Switch to the second worksheet, Select the cell Range and Click on OK.
Step 7: Click on Save to apply the Data Validation selection
Step 8: Required categories are created with a drop-down list in Google Sheet.
If you update the Movie Genre category list, it will not update automatically in the drop-down list. You need to again go to data validation and Select the cell range.
